本研究の目的は，社会脳仮説 (social brain hypothesis; e.g., Dunbar, 1998) に基づき，社会的ネットワークの形成・維持に寄与する社会的知性について，基礎的な検討を加えることであった。ヒトの社会的ネットワークは，含まれる他者との親密度や接触頻度の違いにより，自己を中心とした同心円状の層構造をなす。理論的には他者の意図や情動を推測し自身の行動を調整するといった社会的認知機能が，社会的ネットワークのサイズの規定因となることが想定されている。しかし先行研究では，具体的に，どの層の社会的ネットワークの形成・維持に，どのような社会的認知機能が関与しているかに関する系統的な検討がなされていなかった。本研究では，直接的な対人相互作用に基づく3層の社会的ネットワーク（i.e., 最も親密な他者から構成される「サポート・クリーク」，サポート・クリークの者よりは親密度は低いものの重要な他者が含まれる「共感グループ」，関係の弱い他者を含む「アクティブ・ネットワーク」）のサイズを測定し，他者表情からの情動認知の正確性を測定する課題 (Asian Reading-the-Mind-in-the-Eyes Test; アジア版RME) の成績との関連を検討した。2つのサンプル（計264名）を対象に調査を実施した結果，1つのサンプルにおいて，アジア版RMEの得点と，最内層のネットワークの大きさである，親族・非親族のサポート・クリーク・サイズとの間に正の関連がみられた。非言語的な表情情報から情動を読み取るという社会的認知機能は，提供コストの高いサポートの源となる密な社会的ネットワークの維持に重要となる可能性が示唆された。また，今後の研究に向けた提言として，縦断研究の必要性，社会的ネットワーク・サイズおよび社会的認知機能の測定法の整備が指摘された。
Abstract
The present study aimed to explore the relationships between human social network size and a socio-cognitive ability of reading emotions from other’s eyes as an index of social intelligence. Human social networks have been known to constitute successive layers which correspond to decreasing levels of emotional closeness and frequency of contact (Dunbar, 2014). Here I report a preliminary evidence for the relationships between the ability to read emotions from other’s eyes (measured by Reading-the-Mind-in-the-Eyes Test; RMET) and the size of three layers of respondents’ social network in two Japanese undergraduate samples (total N = 264). There was a positive association between Asian RMET score and the size of related/unrelated support clique (the innermost network consisting of people whom one would seek advice or support in times of crises) in one of two samples. On the other hand, theoretically assumed relationships of Asian RMET score with the size of the outermost layer was not found. These results suggest an important role of reading emotions from other’s eyes when people create and maintain their core social network.
